内容简介：“Historicizing Marine Biology in Modern China: A Comparison Between Amoy and Hong Kong”
This presentation aims tohistoricize the origin and divergence of marine biological institution andknowledge-production in modern China. In the first decade of the twentiethcentury, leading Chinese and foreign biologists linked the survival of China toscience in general, and to marine biology in particular, believing that marinebiology could uplift China’s international image, enlighten the Chinese peopleabout the rich marine flora and fauna, and provide service to the fisherieseconomy. Their efforts manifested in the building of an embryonic Chinese WoodsHole at Amoy, a coastal port-city in southern China.
As the first marinebiological laboratory was established in Amoy in 1930, marine biology was notinstituted in Hong Kong––a British-controlled, Chinese-inhabited colony between1841 and 1997––until the early 1970s, even though Edwin G. Conklin had expressedan interest in setting up a marine biological laboratory in Hong Kong as earlyas 1922. By comparing and contrasting the developmental trajectories of marinebiology in Amoy and Hong Kong, this study will highlight the political,institutional, and social circumstances in shaping efforts to implement marinebiology in two Chinese coastal cities.
主讲人简介
陆伊骊，美国亚里桑纳大学博士，主要从事近现代中国生物科技的历史、哲学、社会学和人类学研究，著作有《当代中国的生物物理学史》。Christine Y.L.Luk holds a PhD from Arizona State University, and her research interestscenter on the history, philosophy, sociology, and anthropology of bioscienceand biotechnology in modern and contemporary China. Her research has appearedin Journal of the History of Biology, East Asian Science, Technology, andSociety: An International Journal, Engineering Studies, and History and Philosophyof the Life Sciences. Her first book, AHistory of Biophysics in Contemporary China, was published by Springer in2015. She is now working on her second book project, about the history ofmarine biology in modern China.
