题目:Galileo through New Lenses

摘要:In presenting Galileo and his work in context, this series highlights and interweaves threads that traditionally have been underemphasized: his theory of the tides as inspiration, rhetoric, and “proof;” the importance of political differences between Florence, Padua/Venice, and Rome; the place of astrology in the political tensions surrounding the Thirty Years’ War; and a trial that is not primarily about science and religion.

清华科史哲讲座第1讲

讲演者:Rob Iliffe(Oxford University)

题目:Newton and the Creation of the Scientific Genius

时间:9月21日下午3:00-5:00

摘要:Notions of ‘genius’ in the West were traditionally attributed to great artists, or writers, who were either inspired by various divine muses or chosen by a Christian God. Until the Eighteenth Century, natural philosophers (scientists) were not, and indeed could not be depicted as geniuses, although individuals could be said to have a particular ‘genius’ (i.e. talent) for a certain mathematical or scientific subject.  I argue that a specific form of secularization, coupled with novel accounts of scientific creativity and the appearance of modern, and bourgeois conception of intellectual property rights, all made it possible to create a scientific ‘genius’. Amid increasing talk of ‘method’, and the development of forms of 'Enlightened’ democratisation within the scientific community, the emergent genius was understood, paradoxically, as both secular saint and an intellectual aristocrat, a person with an expansive imagination who was nevertheless both a follower and progenitor of the scientific method.  One person above all others, Isaac Newton, fitted the new requirements for such a figure.

邀请科史哲界同仁会后共进晚餐
