课程内容简介： 以中外美术作品为线索，揭示其中的科学内涵及隐身于画面背后的历史故事。教师旨在引导学生一道观摩、欣赏、分析和探讨，重点是美术作品特别是西洋油画中的科学与技术，包括画面所表现的或隐含其中的种种发明创造、引导人类探索自然奥秘的精神力量、科学家的生活、推进社会前进或给人类带来灾难的智慧果实等等，而不是光与色的变幻和远近大小的表现等陈旧话题。整个课程由16讲（每讲2学时）组成，涵盖古希腊神话与哲学、中世纪教父文化、地理大发现、文艺复兴、科学革命、工业革命，以及非西方文明的科学等重要题材，述及苏格拉底、柏拉图、亚里士多德、阿基米德、达芬奇、哥白尼、伽利略、牛顿、波义耳、拉瓦锡、达尔文等哲人及科学大师的逸闻趣事，也会介绍艺术作品中表现的种种发明及其产生的社会背景。
Course Description: Taking the fine art works as a masterstroke, this course reveals the scientific connotation and the historical context hiding behind the visual images. It aims to guide students to observe, appreciate, analyse and discuss relevant topics, especially the science and technology expressed in the Western paintings, including those masterpieces display or implied by various inventions, the spiritual force guiding the human beings to explore the mysteries of the nature, the life of scientists, and the consequences whatever positive or negative, caused by the progress of science and technology. It consists of 16 lectures (2 hrs for each) covering most important topics in the field of the History of Science, such as Hellenic myth and philosophy, medieval culture and religion, great navigation, renaissance, scientific revolution, industrial revolution, enlightenment, etc.
先修要求：大学本科生，对科学与艺术的关系感兴趣。

教学目标：以帮助学生建构完整的知识地图为宗旨，注重培养学生的独立思考能力和鉴赏艺术作品的眼光及品味。
