Course Description: This course introduces undergraduate students to a generalist view of the past terrain of life sciences (the term “biology” was not coined until the 19th century). In an undergraduate survey, it is more important to paint a panoramic view of the whole forest than to enumerate the trees, but it is also important to stop and examine some of the individual trees. To achieve a balanced discussion of both generalist and and some specialist views, I chose Lois Magner’s A History of the Life Sciences (3rd edition) as the core text. The first five chapters of this book gave a generalist view of the Greek origin of life sciences stretching all the way back to Aristotle and Galen. The last six chapters transitioned to a specialist analysis of biological problems involving physiology, cytology, microbiology, genetics, and molecular biology. This course will be of interest to anyone who wants a basic understanding of the history of biology grounded in the Western tradition of natural philosophy.
