课程内容简介：本课程聚焦于从古代到19世纪的科学仪器，探讨这些器物在科学技术过程发展中所扮演的重要作用及其与社会、文化的广泛关系。课程将历史上的仪器分为天文计时仪器、天文演示仪器、测量仪器、光学仪器、计算仪器、哲学仪器等十余个专题，每个专题将着重介绍其中最具代表性的三至五件仪器，从产生背景、原理机制、使用方法、使用者和制造者、审美与象征意义等多个维度展开讲述。课程还将结合清华大学科学博物馆中的收藏品、复原品和展览，使学生领略仪器检读和复原研究的基本方法。
Course Description: This course provides a survey on the scientific instruments from ancient times to the 19th century, explores the critical role they played in the history of science and technology and their relations with society and culture. The course categorizes the historical instruments into a dozen topics, including astronomical and timing-telling devices, astronomical demonstration instruments, surveying instruments, optical instruments, calculating instruments, philosophical instruments, etc. Each topic focuses on the most typical three to five pieces of objects, offering an in-depth analysis from multiple dimensions, such as the historical background, the mechanism, the method of use, users and makers, aesthetics and symbolism, and so on. The teaching will also connect with the collections, replicas, and exhibitions in the Science Museum at Tsinghua University, giving students an introduction to basic methods of instrument examination and reconstruction research.
