课程内容简介：本课程介绍19世纪以来围绕着达尔文的学术研究和文学导读。达尔文革命与哥白尼革命并列为改变人们认知世界的革命性学说，但学术领域关于达尔文主义（Darwinism）、新达尔文主义（Neo-Darwinism）、社会达尔文主义 （social Darwinism）, 还有进化论 （evolutionism）的研究和讨论却没有进入一般读者的视野。此课程的第一部分会集中讨论达尔文的进化理论，特别介绍达尔文思想的理论、文化、社会根源，《物种起源》在1859年发表后产生的争端，转而讨论达尔文思想对性别、文学、宗教、政治和哲学上的冲击。第二部分介绍全球视野下的达尔文研究，包括不同语言下的达尔文传记和文本，从埃及到日本和中国，不同国家、语种和文化下都有一个各自刻画出来的达尔文。
Course description: In the first half of the course, we will focus on Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. We begin by examining the intellectual, cultural and social roots of Darwin's scientific thought, followed by discussion of his The Origin of Species (1859) and the controversy it engendered. From there, we move on to investigate the impact of key Darwinian themes on notions of gender, literature, religion, politics, and philosophy. The second half of the course covers the global studies of Darwin, including but not limited to the translation and interpretation of Darwin’s thoughts and texts stretching from Egypt to Japan and China.
