课程内容简介：中国近现代科技史是科学史辅修专业必修课之一，主要介绍十九世纪以来中国的科学与技术思想史、文化史和编纂学。课程有两大主线：第一部分（1-6讲）介绍清末民初由传教士和改革者倡导的西学东渐；第二部分（7-14讲）讲述民国以后中国对现代化的追求与反思。课程的其中一个重点是科学如何塑造历史和被历史反塑造。
Course Description：This is a mandatory course intending for undergraduate students minoring in the history of science. It aims to introduce students to two core concepts for grasping the history and historiography of science and technology in modern China. The first of which is known as “the advent of Western Science” whereby science in its modern, Westernized form was introduced to China, mostly by missionaries and reformers, first during the Ming and second in the late Qing, followed by the second closely related theme, which is loosely called “China’s quest for modernization,” which lasts from the early Republican era all the way to contemporary China. The overarching learning objective is to obtain a clearer understanding of the place of science and technology in modern China. After taking this course, students should get a basic understanding of the role of science in shaping the rise of modern China and how Chinese culture and politics in turn shape the course of scientific development.
