
The Department of the History of Science was founded on 16 May 2017 under the Faculty of Humanities. Prof. Wu Guosheng was appointed as the founding chair of the department. Our faculty specialize in these four main areas:
History of Western scientific thought
History of science and technology in China
Science, Technology, and Society
Philosophy of science and technology
Science communication and science museum
We offer courses and degree programs at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. Through active participation in the undergraduate General Education curriculum, we are committed to providing quality education to talented students with interdisciplinary vision and comprehensive development in the arts and sciences. The History of Science department is home to the Science Museum and takes up the task of building and managing the museum collection. Through the platform of the Science Museum, the department contributes to the disciplinary convergence of arts and sciences and furthers the public’s interest in scientific culture.



Tsinghua University was an important base for the development of historical study of science and technology in China. In the 1940s and 1950s, YE Qisun, LIU Xianzhou, LIANG Sicheng and ZHANG Zigao conducted pioneering research in the history of physics, mechanical engineering, architecture, and chemistry respectively.
2003 Tsinghua University was authorized to offer master’s degrees in history of science and technology
2017/5/16 Tsinghua University established the department of the history of science
2018/4/11 Tsinghua University began to offer “history of science” undergraduate minor degree program, and adopted the first cohort of students in May
2019/5/6 The State Council’s Academic Degrees Committee authorized Tsinghua to offer doctoral degrees in history of science and technology.
2022/2/24 Tsinghua University played a major role in bringing about the accreditation of “history of science” as an undergraduate major program in China.
