Course Description: Building on recent scholarship in the fields of history of science and global history, this course investigates the interrelationship between human and nonhuman animals in history. How have animals helped define what it means to be human and human relationships with the natura world? How can we better understand different cultures through their particular views of animals and their interactions with animals? What do these changing relationships between human and animals reveal about the making of science and other larger historical transformations? We will examine transformations of human-animal relations over time in scientific, historical and cross-cultural perspectives. Readings will focus on the major contributions to the field of animal history both in Western and Non-Western regions, with a particular emphasis on East Asia and the Pacific World.

Course Description:How is history related to the environment? Does the environment shape human beings or do human beings give shape to it? To what extent has technology changed the environment? How is the environment related to food production? How does industrialization change our conceptions of environment and food? Agriculture is certainly the locus to explore to find answers. For instance, peasants have been working the land for centuries, but only recently the peasant itself has been conceptualized and considered as an historico-epistemological problem. Moreover, peasants have been assigned to the periphery, while the center has been considered the pole of civilization. Can we accept this conceptual grid? If food production is at the periphery, how come it has a central role in our everyday life then? This course explores the environment in a broad historical perspective and different methodological frameworks, such as intellectual history, global history, and microhistory. Students will get acquainted with current problems of historiography related to the environment (Anthropocene included) and familiarize with different methodologies to delve into historical problems.
