Animals in the American Colonial Endeavors: Exploring the History of Science in the Lake Lanao Region, Philippines, 1900-1913

By Bulkhia U. Panalondong

Lecture Note:

During the American colonial period in the Philippines, efforts to pacify and control the local population were paramount. However, the role of animals in these colonial endeavors remains underexplored. This research study aims to investigate how animals were utilized to aid in these efforts, focusing on the Lake Lanao region. Horses, dogs, and mules played significant roles in military and policing operations, enabling American soldiers to navigate the challenging terrain, track insurgents, and transport equipment. Additionally, this study delves into the cultural significance of animals in the region and explores the potential impact of their use by the American colonial authorities on local beliefs and practices. By analyzing primary sources, including American military reports from the period, and supplementing with secondary sources, this study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play during this historical period.
